Carlos White, an entomologist, founded Insect Lore in 1969. He had the idea to create a kit so that people of all ages could witness a real butterfly moving through its metamorphosis. The key was to create a recipe for caterpillar food to enable the caterpillars to eat and get enough nutrition to become a healthy butterfly. After three years of trial and error he finally came up with a successful diet. It was then that the garden was born. Customers go to the store, obtain the garden, and the certificate, and then mail to the nursery to receive the caterpillars. The caterpillars are shipped in a special jar, which includes the special food. After a few days of observations the butterflies can be set free.
